What is Brow Lift Surgery?
A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate the upper face by lifting the brows and smoothing the forehead. Over time, the skin and tissues around the forehead and eyebrows can sag, creating wrinkles, frown lines, and a tired or angry expression. A brow lift can help restore a more youthful, refreshed, and alert appearance by repositioning the eyebrows and tightening the underlying muscles and skin.
How Brow Lift Surgery works?
A brow lift offers a variety of aesthetic benefits, including:
- Lift Drooping Eyebrows: Brow lift surgery can restore the eyebrows to a more youthful position, improving the overall shape and symmetry of your eyes and upper face.
- Smooth Forehead Lines: The procedure smooths out deep forehead lines and frown lines between the eyebrows, giving your forehead a smoother, less wrinkled appearance.
- Reduce the Appearance of “Angry” or “Tired” Expressions: If your brow area is naturally heavy or sagging, it can create an angry or fatigued look. A brow lift can soften these expressions, making you appear more relaxed, awake, and youthful.
- Enhance Facial Harmony: By lifting the eyebrows, a brow lift helps balance the upper face with the rest of your features, leading to a more harmonious, youthful appearance.
Types of Brow Lift Procedures
There are several different approaches to brow lift surgery, and our surgeons will work with you to choose the best option based on your anatomy and desired results.
- Traditional Brow Lift (Coronal Brow Lift): In this approach, a long incision is made along the hairline, from ear to ear, allowing the surgeon to lift the forehead and reposition the brows. This technique is most effective for patients with significant sagging or excess skin in the brow area.
- Endoscopic Brow Lift: This minimally invasive technique uses small incisions and a camera (endoscope) to allow the surgeon to lift and reposition the brow. The endoscopic brow lift is ideal for those with mild to moderate sagging, as it results in shorter scars and a faster recovery time.
- Temporal Brow Lift (Lateral Brow Lift): The temporal or lateral brow lift focuses on lifting the outer portion of the eyebrows. This procedure is commonly recommended for patients who have sagging or drooping only at the outer brows (commonly known as "hooded" eyes). The incisions are typically made along the hairline or in the natural creases of the temple.
- Mini Brow Lift: A mini brow lift targets specific areas of the forehead and brows. This procedure involves smaller incisions and is ideal for individuals who don’t need a full brow lift but want to correct mild brow sagging or horizontal lines.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Brow Lift Surgery?
A brow lift is an excellent option for individuals who:
- Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations.
- Have sagging or low eyebrows that make them appear tired, angry, or sad.
- Have deep forehead wrinkles or furrows that make them look older than they feel.
- Want to restore a more youthful and alert appearance to their face.
- Are bothered by drooping eyelids or brow asymmetry.
If you're unsure whether a brow lift is right for you, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our experienced surgeons to discuss your goals and options.
Procedure of Brow Lift Surgery
A brow lift is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of the surgery and your surgeon’s recommendation. The procedure typically lasts 1 to 2 hours.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Incisions: Depending on the technique, your surgeon will make incisions either along the hairline, in the scalp, or in small, discreet locations.
- Tissue Elevation and Repositioning: The underlying tissues and muscles are carefully lifted and repositioned to smooth out wrinkles and elevate the brows.
- Stitching and Closing: The incisions are closed with sutures or staples, and the area is bandaged to minimize swelling.
Recovery After Brow Lift Surgery
The recovery process for a brow lift varies depending on the type of procedure performed, but most patients experience a relatively smooth recovery. Here's what to expect:
- Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising around the eyes and forehead are common but typically subside within 7-10 days.
- Discomfort: You may experience mild discomfort or tightness in the forehead area, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication.
- Post-Operative Care: Your surgeon will provide you with instructions for caring for your incisions, including keeping the area clean and avoiding excessive movement or pressure on your forehead.
- Return to Activities: Most patients can return to work and normal activities within 10-14 days, although it’s important to avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks.
- Full Recovery: It can take 1-3 months for the full results of the brow lift to be visible, as swelling continues to subside and the tissues settle into their new position.
Long-Lasting Results
A brow lift offers long-lasting results, with many patients enjoying a more youthful and refreshed appearance for many years. While the natural aging process will continue, the improvements made by the brow lift will help you maintain a more rejuvenated look. To preserve your results, it’s important to follow a healthy lifestyle, protect your skin from sun damage, and use proper skincare.

Ans: This is best evaluated by Dr. Hitesh Gupta at WFY Plastic Surgery who will analyze your requirements and advise a specific procedure depending on the level of droop and permanency of results desired by you.
Ans: A pre-trichial brow lift is undertaken through an incision in or along the hairline and a flap is raised. A subdermal bite of tissue is taken to raise the brow with a permanent suture and hitched to the higher level bringing about the right amount of brow lift. This approach is particularly useful in people with high foreheads which in women may not be very attractive. In such cases, a pre-determined amount of skin can be removed to reduce the height of the forehead known as “Forehead reduction."
Ans: Suture suspension brow lift involves using a small incision in the hairline to get down to the mid layer of the scalp and using a Direct or an Indirect technique to anchor the tissue at a higher level to bring about the right level of brow elevation. There may be a slight dimpling of the skin near the hairline for a few months and occurs due to the pleating of the skin as excess skin is not excised.
